BILL GAITHER (Founder/Bass)
Earned 7 Grammy Awards, more than two dozen Gospel Music Association Dove
Awards, and countless other honors
Has written or co-written more than 700 inspirational songs
Received ASCAPʼs Songwriter of the Century Award in 2000, along with his wife,
Founded the Gaither Vocal Band in 1981

The pages of history have been written by ordinary people who had something
extraordinary to say through their lives. Bill Gaither is just such an individual... an
Indiana-born kid with an insatiable love for music who grew to become an
industry leader who would change the course of gospel music history through the
songs he has written and through his iconic influence among his fellow artists.
An avid fan of gospel quartets throughout his childhood, Bill founded his first
group, The Bill Gaither Trio, in 1956, while he was a college student. He began
teaching English in 1959 because his musical aspirations couldnʼt support him
full-time... yet.

In 1962, Bill did one of the best things he has ever done. He married Gloria
Sickal, who became the best writing partner Bill could have found anywhere. The
couple spent the first five years of their married life juggling full-time teaching
jobs, writing, singing, recording and publishing until music became their full-time
career in 1967.

The collaborations of Bill and Gloria Gaither have resulted in more than 700
popular gospel songs, including the hymnal standard “Because He Lives,” “The
King Is Coming,” “Something Beautiful,” “He Touched Me,” “It Is Finished,”
“Thereʼs Something About That Name,” “Letʼs Just Praise The Lord,” and “Loving
God, Loving Each Other.” Bill and Gloria have collectively won seven Grammy
Awards and more than a dozen nominations, and they have received more than
two dozen Dove Awards from The Gospel Music Association, earning the title of
Gospel Music Associationʼs “Songwriter of the Year” eight times.

After decades of unprecedented musical successes, Bill and Gloria still operate
their business from Billʼs hometown of Alexandria, IN, and they dwell in the same
home in which they raised their family. They live a lifestyle focused on investing
their resources into eternal things.

“Our calling is not just making music... but communicating the reality of Christ.
That might mean birthing a song about Him or simply offering a cup of cold water
to someone who needs it. Gloria and I have never claimed to have God figured
out, but we do know that if He could use two imperfect people like us to
communicate His Truth to the world, He can use everyone sitting in the audience,
working on our staff or singing with us. If we have done anything right over the
years, I hope we have built bridges where people could connect with God and
with each other. That is what started us writing and what will keep us going for
the rest of our lives.”

Began his career in1972 in his familyʼs singing group, The Singing Samaritans
Received multiple Dove Awards over the course of his career.

Michael English is, without question, among the most powerful communicators
the gospel music industry has been blessed to know. Music is quite literally bred
into his DNA. He learned early in life how to harmonize and communicate a song
as part of the familyʼs traveling musical group led by his father.
Following his high school graduation, the young North Carolina native joined The
Singing Americans, where he first recorded an anthem that would become his
signature song, “I Bowed On My Knees.”

Michael joined the Gaither Vocal Band in 1985 and his soulful, power-packed
voice combined with his spectacular connection with audiences quickly launched
him to the forefront of the Christian music world. In spite of his battles with stage
fright and frequent panic attacks, Michaelʼs phenomenal gift for communication
garnered the attention of audiences of all ages, as well as industry professionals,
music labels and, his departing from the Gaither Vocal Band, he went on to
pursue a solo career until he rejoined the Gaither Vocal Band in 2009.

Wesley Adam Hampton was born December 8, 1977, in Memphis, TN. While he
was a college student at Trevecca in Nashville, Wes invited Andrea Means to
attend a Gaither Homecoming concert for their first official date. After two years
at Trevecca, Wes and Andrea were married and moved to Birmingham, AL.
Wes graduated with a Bachelorʼs degree from the University of Alabama, then
worked as a minister of worship for The Church at Brook Hills in Birmingham. He
had served in worship leadership for two years before getting a phone call from
Bill Gaither that would change his life nearly overnight.

Wes joined the Vocal Band in July 2005 as the groupʼs tenor. His transition into
the Vocal Band was seamless since he already knew the parts to nearly every
song in the GVBʼs repertoire. Bill was immediately struck by Wesʼs clear,
passionate voice, as well as his extensive knowledge of the Vocal Bandʼs body of
work. Most impressive, however, was Wesʼs spirit. Since that time, Wes has
done far more than sing a part. He has joined the ranks of an exclusive handful of
world class singers who have sung tenor for the Gaither Vocal Band over the

“Wes has heart. Thatʼs a quality that simply canʼt be taught,” Bill has stated.
Wes was a defining influence in the Gaither Vocal Bandʼs 2008 Grammy-winning
and Dove- nominated recording, Lovinʼ Life, as well as the Dove-nominated
Christmas recording, Christmas Gaither Vocal Band Style, which released in
2008. He is indeed among the industryʼs most distinct tenor voices and his tender
spirit has further endeared him to audiences all over the world.
The Hamptons reside in Birmingham with their four sons, Barrett, Hudson,
Carden and Sutton, while Wes continues to live out his dream with gratitude. His
warmth, humility and avid sense of humor consistently bring a breath of fresh air
to those who have the privilege of working with him, performing with him or
enjoying his immense talent.

Mark Lowry has been making people laugh, cry and think for nearly 40 years. He
was born in Houston, TX, on June 24, 1958, and has been singing publicly and
recording albums and videos since age eleven.

Mark attended Liberty College (now Liberty University) in Lynchburg, VA, from
1975 to 1980 where he first intended to gain a Business degree. In 1976, Mark
felt God was calling him to a music ministry and, when he graduated in 1980 with
a Youth degree, he began performing at churches around the country. His first
booking agent, Roy Morgan, booked Mark in 43 cities in 41 days. As Mark put it,
“This boy could book a pork chop into a synagogue.”

In his earliest days as a solo singer, Mark recalls his need to fill the silence
between his songs while waiting for the little old man in the back of the church to
change his soundtracks. “Those few seconds of ʻdead airʼ can feel like hours
when youʼre on stage facing a crowd – so, to fill time, Iʼd start talking about my
life and my testimony. People would laugh... and I finally realized I was on to

Thatʼs how Markʼs well-known comedy was born. His unique combination of
music, comedy, stories and poignant truth has been enjoyed by audiences all
over the world and through countless television networks across the United
States and Canada.

In 1988, Mark was offered the baritone part in the Gaither Vocal Band. A longtime
fan of Gaither music before that time, his unique perspective and hilarious
on-stage antics with Bill Gaither were an instant hit with Gaither Vocal Band
audiences. Mark remained with the Vocal Band for 13 years, while also
performing dozens of solo concerts each year, and his comedy became the
highlight of the evening when the Homecoming concert tour was born. Mark has
been featured on most all of the Gaither Homecoming videos – now numbering
more than one hundred – and he often co-hosts alongside Bill.

Earned a degree in vocal performance from Baylor University
Nominated for The Gospel Music Associationʼs 2002 Male Vocalist of the Year
Originally joined Gaither Vocal Band in 1997 and rejoined in 2009

David Phelps has one of the most electrifying tenor voices ever to enter the world
of gospel music. As a member of the Gaither Vocal Band, David has received
four Dove Awards, two Grammy Awards, and more than 13 gold and 15
platinum-selling projects. As a soloist, he received 2009 Dove Award nominations
for Male Vocalist of the Year and Long Form Video for his Christmas DVD, O
Holy Night.

David was very young when his unique musical gifts began to emerge and he
knew early in life that he wanted to be a performer. While earning his degree in
vocal performance from Baylor University, David was given numerous
opportunities to venture into the world of secular music. “I had several
teachers who felt that I should be singing opera or performing somewhere on
Broadway,” he recalls. “In college particularly, I had a teacher who kept pushing
me strongly toward classical music, but when she finally accepted that Christian
music was what God was calling me to do, that became the turning point for me.”
While studying at Baylor, David met Lori Purtle, who has been his wife and rocksolid
support for nearly two decades. The couple has four great kids – Callie,
Maggie Beth, Grant and Coby – and the Phelps reside in the country outside
Nashville, TN.
