Call for Artists: From Their Texarkana to Our Texarkana: A Reimagining of Photographic Images
January 13 @ 8:00 am - February 13 @ 4:00 pm
The TXK150 Committee, Texarkana Museums System (TMS), and the Texarkana Regional Arts and Humanities Council (TRAHC) are pleased to open a call for artists regarding an exhibition titled: From Their Texarkana to Our Texarkana: A Reimagining of Photographic Images.
TMS will provide fifteen photographs from their archives for artist responses. One photograph from each decade, beginning in 1873, will be selected for this exhibition. Artists selected will then reimagine the photograph assigned through their own process. Painting, sculpture, printmaking, drawing, ceramics, photography, and fibers are all eligible mediums. The final exhibition, taking place at the Regional Arts Center, will display the original photograph with the artist’s reimagining.
Artists must submit up to three work samples to this open call. The samples must be finished works. These work samples will be in response to three photographs attached to this open call. Samples submitted will aid the committee in selecting an artist for each of the fifteen photographs. The sample work will not be the work chosen for the final exhibition. Only one artwork per photograph may be submitted for this open call. Please specify which work sample relates to the photos provided. Please title your file in correspondence with each photo followed by your name.
Please email these samples with a brief artist statement to firstname.lastname@example.org.
The exhibition is open to all artists 18 years and older. All work must be original in concept and not copied from another artist’s work. Entries must be received by midnight CST February 13, 2023. Only entries submitted to email@example.com email address will be considered. Entries are limited to a maximum of three works executed in the last two years (2021 – 2023.) Accepted artists must deliver their work by September 9.
Judging will be done through the Arts and Historic District. During this time, the district will select the artists to be accepted into the exhibit. This will happen between February 14 and 17.
Results of the selection process will then be emailed to artists on February 18.
Accepted artists will then be paired with a photograph from the TMS archive. This will be a reproduction of the photograph. From February 18 until September 9, the artist will have time to create this reimagination of their assigned photograph. We will not accept any new artwork before September 1.
For hand delivery, please make an appointment with Chris Wicker at the Regional Arts Center via email: firstname.lastname@example.org. No unscheduled drop offs will be accepted. All hand delivered work should be wrapped or boxed for protection. No unprotected works will be accepted.
If the artwork is to be shipped, both shipping and return shipping costs and insurance are the responsibility of the artist. All entries will be handled with reasonable care, but TXK150, TMS, TRAHC, nor their representatives will be responsible for loss or damage. Reusable shipping containers only. We encourage artists to insure their artwork when shipping.
No packing peanuts allowed. Any shipped artwork found with packing peanuts will not be unpacked, or displayed.
Shipping via FedEx or UPS is mandatory. Any artwork arriving through USPS will be held until a pre-paid return-shipping label from FedEx or UPS is provided. All shipped artwork must include a pre-paid return-shipping label from either FedEx or UPS. Please make sure the return label is addressed to you. Artwork without a pre-paid shipping label from either UPS or FedEx will not be displayed.
TRAHC and TMS agree to receive artworks by either the artist or a designated representative of the artist. Either party will sign in the artwork by providing contact information for the individual dropping off the work. A secondary contact must be given in case the initial contact cannot be reached during pickup.
All accepted artwork is due by Saturday, September 9, 2023 at 4:00 p.m.
All works made for the exhibition must be original, completed, and ready to hang. Frames, mats, and wiring must be professional quality and in good condition. Wiring must be in good condition and substantial enough for the weight of the artwork. All paintings must be framed or stretched on stretcher bars. Two-dimensional works on paper must be framed and under Plexiglas, unless specified by the artist. All freestanding sculptures must be ready for display on arrival. Accepted artwork may not be removed from TRAHC prior to November 25, 2023.
Accepted artists wishing to participate in the auction must specify that they are wanting to donate their work to the auction portion of this exhibition. This will be in the form of a small Google form that will accompany your acceptance notification. Artists who fail to fill out this information will not be considered for this auction. This auction is not necessary for display. Funds will then be given to the TXK150 committee for further programming.
Artwork will be handled with reasonable care. TXK150, TMS, TRAHC and their representatives will not be responsible for loss, theft, or damage of artworks while in the gallery’s possession or in transit. Artists are encouraged to insure their artwork when shipping.
TXK150, TMS, and TRAHC reserve the right to photograph or use any of the works for publicity purposes. Images of accepted entries can be used by TXK150, TMS, and TRAHC for the catalog and other printed materials, archives, website, social media, and for educational purposes. All copyrights for the artwork are retained by the artist. The artist waives any claim, including any claim for invasion of the right of privacy of copyright, against TXK150, TMS, TRAHC, and their directors, employees, and volunteers.
The submission of entries to this competition shall be understood to constitute an agreement on the part of the artist to all rules and conditions as set forth in this prospectus. Entries not meeting the criteria listed herein will be disqualified. TRAHC is a family-oriented arts council and reserves the right to not display excessive nudity or offensive subject matter. This is at the discretion of the Executive Directors of TRAHC.
Due to TRAHC’s extremely limited storage space, artwork left more than 30 days after November 25, 2023 will be deemed the property of TMS and TRAHC unless arrangements have been made in writing and agreed upon by both parties. Any artwork that arrived through USPS will be held until a pre-paid return-shipping label from FedEx or UPS is provided.
