African American Voice: An Evening of Performance with Special Moments for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr
January 10, 2025 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm
The annual African American Voice: An Evening of Performance with Special Moments for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., is Texarkana’s opening event. Since 2002, it has been a full-house event in Cabe Hall, honoring Dr. King’s civil rights work and celebrating his birthday. The event is held every year without regard for weather conditions.
TAAC Chairperson Joyce Campbell, the first TRAHC African American Committee (TAAC), and several other TRAHC Board Members launched the performing arts program in 2002. They are Ruth Ellen Whitt, CEO; Brian Goesl, Public Relations Director; Nita Fran Hutcheson; Marvin Brewster; Elaine Denmon, Edna Shepherd; and Rita Williams.
The program features Pledge to Service and Dr. King’s Six Principles of Non-Violence ceremonies, musical performances, and a message focused on Dr. King’s life and legacy.
Dr. King’s program and the TAAC-sponsored exhibition, Good Trouble Quilts: The Life and Legacy of Congressman John Lewis, are uniquely connected this year. Their work for civil rights and the mentor-mentee, brother-family member relationship give this year’s event special meaning.
During the meet-and-greet hour two years ago, a citizen said, “I come to this program almost every year. The focus is always on Dr. King, yet it is different every year.”
